In South Slavic folklore, a vampire was believed to pass through several distinct stages in its development. The first 40 days were considered decisive for the making of a vampire; it started as an invisible shadow and then gradually gained strength from the lifeblood of the living, forming a (typically invisible) jelly-like, boneless mass, and eventually building up a human-like body nearly identical to the one the person had had in life. This development allowed the creature to ultimately leave its grave and begin a new life as a human.
The vampire, who was usually male, was also sexually active and could have children, either with his widow or a new wife. These could become vampires themselves, but could also have a special ability to see and kill vampires, allowing them to become vampire hunters.
In Southern Slavic folklore, Serbia is considered the birthplace of vampires. Not many Serbian words have become internationally recognized, but the one that has made quite an impact, as we all know the word “vampire” (Serbian vampir). During the 18th century, Austrian officials noted that the Slavic population in the northern country’s region of Vojvodina (then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire), was digging out and re-murdering cadavers, calling them “vampires.”
The Bulgarian Bogomil Magi (upper clergy) produced apocrypha during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries and these documents do give us some insight into the Bogomils' beliefs. God represents the Force of Creation, which is opposed by the equally powerful Force of Destruction.
Man avoids the forces of darkness through restoration through utilizing the four elements: bathing and washing; air (ventilation of the house and living outside); greeting the sun in the morning; and recognizing the celestial creations in the evening; and, of course, through the sermons of the church;
Burial of the dead takes place outside of the town and is done only during the evening after sunset or during the predawn hours;
It is forbidden to bring dead bodies into a church, because dead bodies belong to the Force of Destruction. (Perkowski)
Entrenched in the Bogomil belief system are the seeds for what eventually becomes modern vampire lore. Primarily that the early Slavs believed that the body (as matter) is evil and representative of Satan while the soul is holy and deserving of reincarnation. It is easy to see how Bogomilistic views on demonology combined with the dualistic natures of the Force of Destruction and its need to destroy the Force of Creation birthed the vampire. The continual battle between Destruction and Good can be encapsulated by a demon's ability to animate a corpse that sucks the blood (i.e. life force) from a living person.
Pre-Christian practices on the Baltic coast are described by Helmold in his Chronicle of the Slavs (1164-1168):
"... after the victim is felled the priest drinks of its blood in order to render himself more potent in the receiving of oracles. For it is the opinion of many that demons are very easily conjured with blood ... The Slavs too, have a strange delusion. At their feasts and carousals they pass about a bowl over which they utter words ... in the name of the gods ... of the good one, as well as the bad one--professing that all propitious fortune is arranged by the good god, adversity by the bad god.
If we take the association of corpses with evil forces (i.e. the Force of Destruction) and combine it with demons, which hound men and women in order to deplete them of their life force, we can easily see how mundane illnesses can be attributed to vampires. The killing of the vampire is also rooted in Bogomilistic beliefs. Since most medieval philosophies held that the head and the heart were the repositories for a person's emotions and desires, it made perfect sense to pierce both the head and heart in order to curb the violent desire for destruction exhibited by the vampire. Cremation occurs in order to execute the "ultimate separation of elements belonging to the force of good and those belonging to the force of evil"

Reginald, known as Reggie, was the eldest son of William (Bill) Stenning and his wife Emily
Stenning nee Gander. He was born in late 1891 and baptised here on 01/11/1891. His father was a
gardener and the family lived at Treeps Cottage. He is listed at home on both the 1901 and 1911
censuses when he was a baker’s assistant.
Reggie’s papers have recently been digitised but form part of the ‘burnt documents’ severely
damaged in an incendiary attack on the repository during WW2. Reggie’s papers are missing large
sections. It is possible to work out that he joined the 1/1st Sussex (Fortress) Reserve of the Royal
Engineers as a sapper on 16/11/1914 and was numbered T224, the ‘T’ indicating this was a Territorial
unit. This unit was based in Newhaven and their role was local defence. As the dangers of invasion
receded six engineer units formed the 1/1st Sussex Army Troops Company, RE. With their specialist
knowledge they left England on board the Empress of India arriving at Le Havre on 20/03/1915
joining the British Expeditionary Force at Etaples. At some point Reginald was raised to Lance
Corporal and, although the date cannot be read, it is most likely to have been before he entered
France. The Company was employed building accommodation for the arriving troops and hospitals
and roads around Etaples. They were moved to Vimy Ridge in May of 1916. Here their role was to
extend the deep dugout and tunnel systems under the ridge. One of their innovations was to construct
a ropeway slung from the roof to carry the spoil out to the surface. This system was later adopted by
other units. They also built concrete machine gun positions, and if that were not enough, some of
them, reportedly, helped the local farmers with their harvest.
In late 1916 a reorganisation of troop numbering of the Territorial Forces was undertaken. Six figure
numbers were allocated and the Sussex Fortress men were given numbers starting at 545001 on 01/
02/1917. Reggie was renumbered 545119. Just two days before this Reggie was hit in the leg by a
shell splinter. He was taken to 45 Casualty Clearing Station based at ‘Edgehill’ near Dernancourt but
died the following day. He is buried in the Dernancourt Communal Cemetery Extension in grave IV.
H. 8. He is remembered on both local war memorials.
Grave B102 in the South Avenue Cemetery holds a member of the Stenning family. In 1920 an Act of
Remembrance laid flowers on the graves of all servicemen who had died. Reginald is mentioned in
the newspaper article and it is possible that flowers were laid here. There is no stone.

Assignment 3 Postmortem
Purpose and Responsibilities The goal of Assignment 3 is to complete a game called Color Shift Crash. My main responsibilities in the team are:
Provide game ideas and prototype design
Implement most of the core game mechanisms (including color switching system, attack determination and enemy death, and blood loss when the platform color does not match the character)
Unify the format of multiple animation materials
Organize and execute two-player gameplay testing
Write the summary part (single-page report and one-page report) and prototype summary
Integrate and unify project documents
Overview of results
Core functions: All preset code functions have been implemented - the character can switch between different colors, attack the enemy and determine death, and lose blood if the character does not match the platform color or encounters a slime.
Testing and feedback: Completed two rounds of two-player playtests and collected key feedback on operation smoothness and difficulty balance.
Documentation and report: Wrote and organized one-page and single-page project summaries, as well as prototype presentation documents to ensure that subsequent reviews are "clear at a glance".
Goal achievement: The project function realization is close to 100%, and the visual and gameplay effects are basically in line with the original settings.
Good aspects
Active team cooperation: Each team member can respond to questions and suggestions raised by others in a timely manner, and the discussion atmosphere is good.
Efficient feedback loop: All members participate in the two-person playtest, quickly locate operation jams and balance issues, and complete multiple iterations in a short period of time.
Document consistency: Under my promotion, all materials and document formats are unified, which is convenient for others to consult and maintain later.
Problems and challenges encountered
Low progress synchronization efficiency: Because the team is not familiar with version control tools (such as Git), each person can only manually upload the latest version to Discord, which is downloaded, merged and tested by a single person.
Duplication of work: Conflicts and lost changes frequently occurred during the integration process, and multiple rollbacks and retests had to be made many times, wasting a lot of time.
Root cause analysis
Lack of version control process: The project did not select a code hosting platform at the beginning, nor did it formulate a branch management and merging strategy, resulting in the inability to efficiently merge changes made by multiple people.
Unclear responsibilities and nodes: No one is designated to be responsible for integration or set up regular merge checkpoints. Everyone develops locally and only finds conflicts when merging
Lessons learned and suggestions for improvement
Introduce Git or similar tools as early as possible: Establish a remote repository (GitHub/GitLab) at the start of the project, and use the clone, pull, and push processes uniformly.
Formulate branch strategies and merge nodes: Agree on the naming rules of "main branch (main) + feature branch (feature/…)", and regularly (such as daily or after each milestone) centrally merge and code review.
Clearly identify the person in charge of integration: Designate one or rotating members as the "merge manager" to handle conflicts, run automated tests, and release daily builds.
Establish a simple process for continuous integration: Even if you only use scripts to check compilation and basic functions locally, you can catch errors in advance before merging and reduce rework.
